In partnership with Artscope: Aid Ukraine 2023, we are pleased to present “The Self-space”, a group exhibition and online auction dedicated to raising funds for relief in Ukraine. Notions of invasion, war and injustice incite self-reflection, both of a physical and emotional nature. Our project has brought together 18 artists whose only direction when submitting to this show was to feel strongly, and to be compelled by that example of their practice. In curating the exhibition, it became clear the contemporary preoccupation is one we have called the "Self-space"; which considers the nuances of belonging - in a literal sense within our physical environment, in our relationship with our communities, and within our own personal identities. Therefore, visitors will see countless threads linking artists through the natural world, both rural and urban. We will see artists negotiating memory, perspective, and understanding nuanced behaviours surrounding sexuality, gender roles, race and age. Our artists also engage in complicated conversations surrounding diaspora, the physical and emotional displacement due to multicultural heritage and histories of conflict. A crucial decision installing this show was to emphasise the doubling and mirroring that naturally occurs within this collective body of work. We see it as the perfect way to define this 'self-space', a journey through our world in understanding who we are, and how to keep bettering the relationships with those around us. Perhaps in this way, art can make a small difference in ending global hostilities.
